If your life was quite laid back and sedentary and now you've decided to do something about it by gaining muscle and losing fat then we have some words of caution. If you are beginning from scratch you will be better off simply easing into things than rushing into them. Changing your life really quickly by incorporating a full blown diet and workout regime will usually end in failure. Sure, some people have the disposition that allows them to do that. But the majority of people have a very difficult time sustaining those kinds of changes all at once. So we would recommend that you ease in your dietary changes and your new exercise regime slowly by forming new habits.

An eclectic approach, where you pick a number of methods, is probably one of the better ways to burn fat and not muscle. Some methods will work better together than others, which is something to keep in mind. However, no matter what, to have the best success you will need to make positive changes with your eating habits. There's so much information out there regarding this subject, so doing this with your diet won't be difficult at all. Then you will need to analyze the kinds of exercise and routines that you do. Of course, this is assuming you're doing some regular exercise, however if you're not then that's ok.

There are a lot of reasons for drinking plenty of water during the day. We aren't suggesting you drink the tap dry, but you should try to consume around eight pints of water each day. The water will aid losing fat as your stomach will feel full up. So the intention here is to try and avoid snacking or drinking anything that contributes toward your fat content. Also if you stay hydrated you'll be able to keep up your energy levels. Drink some water instead of drinks containing caffeine and then observe your energy levels. If you have more energy, then your exercising will be more productive.

Then after that you will be able to start burning fat, not glycogen, with some cardio exercise. So, you should attempt this for some time and then stand back and examine the results.

Avoid as many simple carbohydrates as possible, and we mean simple sugars in this context. This type of sugar will become quickly turned into fat, and a lot of complex carbs will do the same thing. Three simple sugars, as an example, are fructose, sucrose and glucose. However we really must mention something regarding fructose in fruits. Even though they do indeed have a simple sugar, they're still highly recommended to eat as they have lots of other very beneficial properties. In them you'll find minerals, vitamins, good fiber and antioxidants. When trying to just burn fat and not muscle mass there are many approaches that are flexible. That is actually a good thing because it means we have variety and choices for accomplishing this goal.
