We've all been taught that a calorie is a calorie. It's one of the basic tenets of nutrition. Nutrition weight loss, however, comes when you realize that some foods actually provide you with fewer calories than you might think. Have you heard about the Thermogenic Effect? If the food has a high glycemic index, the Thermogenic Effect will probably be less.
Lowly fats take third place in the Thermogenic Effect. Only about 3 percent of the fat you eat is used in the burning up or digestion of the fat. Fat is highly bioavailable and very little energy is expended in the consumption of it. Fat, on the other hand, will help you feel fuller so you'll eat less of it. It's also dense in nutrients. It shouldn't take such a bad rap as the Eskimos and Inuit have thrived on a high fat diet for millennia.
Paying attention to the Thermogenic Effect is sound nutrition. Nutrition weight loss can happen through judicious use of the Thermogenic Effect and watching your caloric intake. On the other hand, eating a single meal per day while skipping breakfast will do little to trigger this effect. This is why most nutritionists advise eating several small meals per day, making your caloric intake as spread out as possible. This will maximize your metabolic rate and will further increase the Thermogenic Effect by as much as ten percent.
This is fascinating nutritional information and it can help you lose weight. Don't however make it the be all and end all of your nutritional health plan. You might just be one of those who really thrive on a diet high in fat calories. The truth is that a low carbohydrate diet is not recommended and a high carb diet without being physically active can make you depressed, miserable and apathetic.
